The opportunities and framework provided by the Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme will provide the theme for a Field Day focussing on adding value to arable farming at Trelawne, Tikokino on 15^th February, starting at 10am.

The Field Day, supported by the BNZ and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Investment Company Ltd, will include expert speakers discussing arable farming economic realities including host and experienced irrigator Phil King.

The day will be split into two sections with the Regional Council’s  Andrew Newman giving an overview and introduction to the scheme and an update on progress and timelines.

The plan change implications will be covered, together with irrigation agreements overview, incentives and support for early adaptors and a chance to register interest.

In the afternoon, Canterbury farmer John Evans will provide an insight into the management of his intensive irrigated arable farming business, growing high value seeds and cereals at Dorie.

With management practises to ensure the maximum return for investment in irrigation, Mr Evans will outline how this can be achieved with a minimal impact on the environment from nutrient losses.

Other speakers include Diana Mathers from FAR and Andrew Curtis CEO of Irrigation New Zealand.
